Allen Dobson, MD, Receives Estes Award
November 1, 2006 - The N.C. Medical Society honored L. Allen Dobson, MD, with the prestigious E. Harvey Estes, Jr., MD, Physician Community Service Award during the Society’s Annual Meeting over the weekend. Dr. Dobson was honored in part for his service to the state as Assistant Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, as well as his work with Community Care of North Carolina.
A native North Carolinian, Dr. Dobson received his undergraduate education at North Carolina State University. He attended medical school at Bowman Gray School of Medicine and completed his residency in family medicine at East Carolina University where he served as chief resident.
In 1992, Dr. Dobson was named the North Carolina Family Physician of the Year. In 1993, he was a finalist for the American Academy of Family Physicians’ Family Physician of the Year. He was given the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. In 2005, Dr. Dobson was selected by the North Carolina Institute of Medicine as a “Champion of Change in North Carolina Medicine” for his work in developing Community Care of North Carolina.
Dr. Dobson has participated in many state and national activities. He is past-president of the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians, past chair of the North Carolina Joint Committee on Medicaid, and past president and chair of the Board of the North Carolina Physicians Advisory Group. In addition to serving as the President and CEO of Cabarrus Family Medicine, he also serves as the Assistant Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.
Cabarrus Family Medicine, PA is a unique multi-clinic group that provides comprehensive family healthcare while maintaining a personal, small-office atmosphere. CFM was founded by Dr. L. Allen Dobson in 1983 as Mt. Pleasant Family Physicians, and has grown to include seven sites in Cabarrus and Stanly Counties, with 37 medical doctors, 10 physician assistants, and 2 family nurse practitioners. CFM also provides the faculty and training sites for Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency Program, a joint venture with NorthEast Medical Center.
CFM’s seven clinics are situated in Concord, Mt. Pleasant, Kannapolis, Harrisburg, Richfield and Albemarle. In addition to their family practice centers, CFM also provides services for mental health needs through their Psychological and Behavioral Health office located in Concord. Another addition to their network is the Sports Medicine and Injury Center, located at their Poplar Tent site in Concord.
