Excellence in Original Research Recognized by the American Academy of Family Physicians
LEAWOOD, Kan., December 28, 2005 – Concord, NC based physician Dr. Kevin Burroughs was recently recognized for his outstanding original research during the 2005 American Academy of Family Physicians' Scientific Assembly meeting in San Francisco. Twenty-four family medicine research papers were selected from across the nation and presented as part of the AAFP Family Practice Research Presentations program.
Dr. Burroughs received a first-place award in the original research category for "Abnormal Blood Pressures in Adolescents on the Preparticipation Physical Examination: What is the prevalence and how often is it missed?" His research looked at over 1500 physicals and showed that up to 20% of high school and middle school students studied had blood pressures that were at least in the pre-hypertension range, and that approximately 7% had hypertensive values. Unfortunately very few of these students were scheduled for follow-up.
Dr. Burroughs is the Director of Sports Medicine with the Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency Program and practices at the Sports Medicine and Injury Center in Concord.

Founded in 1947, the American Academy of Family Physicians represents more than 94,000 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the only medical society devoted solely to primary care.
Nearly one in four of all office visits are made to general and family physicians. That is 215 million office visits each year - 59 million more than to any other medical specialty. Today, family physicians provide the majority of care for America's underserved and rural populations.
In the increasingly fragmented world of health care where many medical specialties limit their practice to a particular organ, disease, age or sex, family physicians are dedicated to treating the whole person across the full spectrum of ages. Family medicine's cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated
care.
