MAUREEN MURPHY, MD

Maureen E. Murphy, MD came to Cabarrus Family Medicine after over 20 years of private practice in North Carolina.
She grew up in a small town in Kansas where she graduated from college with a degree in English and Journalism. After working in journalism and public relations for a time, including the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine in Kansas City, MO, she attended medical school at the University of Kansas in Kansas City, Kansas, determined to be a family doctor from Day 1! She was active early in American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) activities and was the chair of the national student conference and on the AAFP Board of Directors. She came to NC in 1985 for residency at Duke University, continuing her AAFP activities as the resident on the Board of Directors.
After residency, she taught for 2 years at East Carolina University in the residency program. She then moved to Gastonia in private practice and started a department of Family Medicine at the hospital there. She also met her husband, Scott Maxwell in Gastonia. She continued her family practice activities as the president of the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians.
In 2001, she moved to the medically underserved mountain community of Sparta, NC, where she practiced full-scope family medicine for 11 years before moving to Concord.
She and Scott are happy to be closer to his family. They are avid sports fans, particularly the Kansas Jayhawks and Carolina Panthers, and enjoy going to games. They also enjoy gardening, cooking and their furry children.
