Cabarrus Family Medicine Physician Receives Certification in Travel Medicine
August 26, 2007-Charles W. Rhodes, MD, Senior Executive Vice President and Medical Director at Cabarrus Family Medicine has successfully passed the International Society of Travel Medicine Certificate of Knowledge Examination administered in Vancouver, Canada on May 20, 2007. With 2,000 members in 65 countries, and one of only 7 in the State of North Carolina, Dr. Rhodes joins the largest organization of professionals dedicated to the advancement of the specialty of travel medicine.
The International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) administers the examination to test the level of knowledge and skills to practice travel medicine. The exam is open to all licensed travel medicine professionals, including physicians, nurses, and pharmacists. The 200-multiple choice exam is designed to reflect the reality of day-to-day pre-travel practice. ISTM is committed to the promotion of healthy and safe travel. In cooperation with national and international health care providers, academic centers, the travel industry and the media, ISTM advocates and facilitates education, service and research activities in the field of travel medicine. For more information about ISTM, visit www.istm.org.
Dr. Rhodes has practiced travel medicine for over 10 years and has lectured extensively on the topic. Initially, his interest came out of his own travels. The catalyst for the clinic, however, was the opportunity to participate in a medical mission to the Dominican Republic four years ago. “It changed my life, it rejuvenated my faith, and it reminded me why I went into medicine in the first place. A growing number of churches in the area are participating in mission work, and there was a very obvious need for medical services to get these missionaries ready for their journey.”
As family physicians at Cabarrus Family Medicine, we are dedicated to educating our patients about the impact of traveling to different areas on their health and helping them prepare for travel by providing appropriate immunizations and information needed to stay healthy before and after your trip. Whether traveling as a family or individual, or with a group from a church or other organizations, our Travel Medicine program can be extremely beneficial in assuring a successful trip.
